Laurel, Miss.-Further pushing the envelope in the sound of soul music, Laurel-based indie label L-Town Records recently signed to its roster Houston-based
singer/songwriter Calvin Taylor, the son of platinum-selling blues balladeer Johnnie Taylor and gospel songbird Benita Arterberry.
Mixed with a smooth, smokey baritone reminiscent of his father’s sensuous serenades and the soul-stirring inspirations of his mother’s heartfelt hymns, Calvin Taylor embodies the best in rhythm and blues from the past and present. And on his swinging new single “That’s My Baby” (produced by Rodney “Brimstone” Ashford and Rodney “BluNote” Evans), he pours praises all over his lady atop an infectious, mid-tempo groove.
“Signing to L-Town is a great opportunity for both of us. Meeting the staff and everyone on the label felt like going to a family reunion, seeing family members you haven’t seen in a long time,” said the 45-year-old songster. “I’m bringing another chapter to what they already had going.”
Born in Dallas and raised by this mother, young Calvin grew up in a music household. Before he was even thought of, his mother was singing background for his pop. But by the time their bouncing baby boy came along, the couple split up. And while Johnnie was busy selling out shows around the world, Benita was securing a career as a much-respected gospel singer.
Not only were both of his parents famous, but his surrogate aunts and uncles were such superstars as 1980s Billboard-charting R&B duo Yarbrough & Peoples and platinum-selling funk band Lakeside. Being raised around some of music’s royalty, Calvin was groomed and destined for greatness.
“I grew up in music. Growing up around them, I didn’t realize how important these people were. All I saw was family,” says Taylor. “I didn’t realize the magnitude of their success until I was in high school.”
It was in high school that he began recording his own music and cultivating his craft. Over the years, he has released several regionally popular songs such as “All In All Out,” “Nose Wide Open” featuring DJ Trucker and “Misty Blue,” as well as albums Just A Piece and R&B Love.
And he plans to bring all his talent and experience to L-Town, an independent label which has steadily harvested the local talent pool since its inception in 2021. “My music is homegrown. It’s really honest. I write from personal experiences only, and L-Town has the expertise to take my music and my career to the next level,” says Calvin. “With this new deal between me and L-Town, I can be what Johnnie was to Malaco.”
That’s My Baby” is a soulful tribute to love, celebrating a strong, loyal woman who uplifts her partner. With heartfelt lyrics and smooth melodies, it highlights the beauty of an imperfectly perfect bond built on trust, respect, and devotion.
